PE and Sport Premium

Use of the Sports Premium Grant

Schools must use the Sports Premium funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education (PE), physical activity, and sport offered to pupils.

This means the funding should be used to:

  • Enhance or expand the existing PE, physical activity, and sport provision.
  • Build long-term capacity and capability within the school, so that improvements benefit both current and future pupils.

Schools should focus on improvements in the following key areas

  • Increased participation in regular physical activity
In line with Chief Medical Officer guidelines, all children and young people aged 5 to 18 should engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day, with a minimum of 30 minutes taking place during the school day.
  • Raising the profile of PE and sport
Position PE and sport as tools for driving whole-school improvement.
  • Improving staff confidence and competence
Develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence of all staff in delivering high-quality PE and sport.
  • Offering a broader range of sports and activities
Provide pupils with more diverse and inclusive opportunities to participate in sport and physical activity.
  • Increasing participation in competitive sport
Encourage more pupils to get involved in competitions and structured sporting events.

Examples of how the funding can be used

  • Provide professional development, mentoring, and training for staff to enhance PE teaching and promote physical activity across the school.
  • Hire qualified sports coaches to work alongside teachers and expand current opportunities.
  • Introduce new sports, dance, or physical activities to engage a wider range of pupils.
  • Offer targeted support for less active children through tailored activities, including school sports and holiday clubs.
  • Organise or participate in more sports competitions.
  • Collaborate with other schools to deliver joint sports clubs or events.
  • Increase involvement in the School Games initiative.
  • Encourage pupils to take on leadership or volunteer roles in sport and physical activity.
  • Improve outcomes in primary school swimming, ensuring pupils meet national curriculum requirements by the end of Key Stage 2.
  • Integrate physical activity into the school day through active travel, active playgrounds, and other movement-friendly routines.

Sports Premium Grant

At St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School, PE and sport play a vital role in the life of our school. All pupils take part in at least two hours of high-quality physical education each week as part of the curriculum, with further opportunities provided to promote active lifestyles and a love of physical activity. We believe that PE and sport are essential to the holistic development of every child, helping them grow physically, socially and emotionally. Through active participation, pupils learn key values such as teamwork, fair play, and respect for themselves and others. There is strong evidence to show the positive impact of regular physical activity on children’s health, growth, and development—improving motor skills, building muscle strength, increasing bone density and encouraging habits that support lifelong well-being. PE also plays a crucial role in supporting mental health, helping children to understand the benefits of exercise and how it can positively influence how they feel. Sport provides a supportive and structured environment for pupils to develop resilience and learn how to handle both success and setbacks, equipping them with the skills they need to thrive both in and beyond school.
